Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a remedial and corrective form of bodywork. It works deep into the muscle fibres to relieve chronic pain, reduce inflammation and restore range of motion. Ideally suited to anyone looking to speed up the healing of strains, sprains and injuries.

In a Swedish Massage the therapist will almost exclusively use their hands to apply superficial pressure. However, with Deep Tissue massage, the forearms and elbows are engaged to apply stronger force at a deeper level. Strokes are slow and pressure is directed at specific areas of tension in the muscles and soft tissue often referred to as 'knots'. While it is possible to fall asleep during a Swedish Massage its generally not so in a Deep Tissue massage. Some techniques will require the client’s active participation such as deep breathing, stretching or moving into different positions.

Deep tissue massage is the most intense treatment we offer and can be somewhat uncomfortable or painful at times. However, any pain experienced should instinctively feel like it’s also doing good. We like to call it a 'sweet pain'. While Deep Tissue massage is best suited to those with a medium to high pain tolerance, the therapist should always work within the recipient's own pain threshold. The client should feel in control of the pressure used and be prepared to speak up if it becomes unbearable.

For most people, Deep Tissue massage is not the most relaxing treatment to receive. However, the long term benefits should outweigh any temporary discomfort.
